The Lateral Pupwash (patent pending)

Since the frost melted we have resumed battlefield conditions and the house sits perched as a greenish oasis in a sea of muddy fields. Such times are challenging for a white dog, and even more challenging for she who has recently hoovered the upholstery in the living room. We have not yet reached the levelContinue reading “The Lateral Pupwash (patent pending)”

Persistence rewarded

Another day of frost and sunshine so Lyra and I were off and out early to make the most of it. In the shade of the trees the grass is wearing frost prickles and I stumbled over one frozen clump of leaves and mud that looked for all the world like an albino hedgehog. MuchContinue reading “Persistence rewarded”

The Aga man cometh

I started this post parked in a very chilly kitchen tasked with ensuring the Aga man was greeted, encoffulated and then held prisoner until our ancient reconditioned Aga is relit. Outside the sun was shining merrily but the kitchen was glacial. The Aga was part of the house when we bought it, and old andContinue reading “The Aga man cometh”

A gnashing of teeth

I have toothache, well, gum ache. I am blessed with four impacted and semi erupted wisdom teeth. Every now and again something goes awry and I get a gum infection. I did se about having them removed some years ago, but the process described by the “maxiofacial surgeon” sounded horrendous and I wimped out. ByContinue reading “A gnashing of teeth”

Underground overground

The frost has melted these last three days and the tracks have softened to a thick, clinging mud. Lyra returns from every walk utterly filthy. We gave her a shower and blow dry a couple of days ago (not enthusiastically received) but by lunchtime the next day she was again sporting a fine mud pack.Continue reading “Underground overground”

In the deep freeze

We are still having alternate days of hard frost and then partial thaw. The roads around the back are like a skating rink. Water is running off the fields on the thaw days then freezing overnight. Lyra is learning much about ice and frost on our walks. She is most intrigued by the concept ofContinue reading “In the deep freeze”

Tracks and trails

There was a light snow overnight and a crusty sprinkling over the grass when Lyra and I ventured out for a mid morning walk. As we passed the little wood to the east the shallow snow was covered in prints. In amongst the pointy toes of deer there were lots of what looked like theContinue reading “Tracks and trails”

Once more with feeling

Christmastide is nearly over. (It is not truly over until all the new Christmas socks and knickers have been worn, the last of the Christmas cake munched and the final, loathsome, soft centres consumed or binned – we still have a way to go on these fronts). The tree has, however, been wrestled outside leavingContinue reading “Once more with feeling”

Asceticism Abandoned

This morning, after considering the bathroom scales, I donned leggings and exercise wear with the tentative thought that, if the weather was not sufficiently clement for gardening and Lachlan was hogging the dog, I might hit the exercise bike. Obviously not immediately, I put a jumper on too and determined to work up to it.Continue reading “Asceticism Abandoned”
