Almost quarter way through

A twitter compadre has just noted that this is the last day of the first quarter of the current century. So you are probably expecting me to say something momentous and deep about the state of our times. Fear not…… I shall leave you to your own ruminations and conclusions, but hope you find some good things to remember.

For my part, I am settling down in the queue for the shower before Hogmanay kicks off properly. Masterchef is in the kitchen and there has been, really, hardly any shouting and swearing. Perhaps the morning dash to the vet with a poorly cat (who was found to be perfectly fine and probably guilty of consuming a bad mouse or dodgy ‘shroom) simply lanced the boil in anticipation.

I have completed my starter (I cured the salmon) and pudding contributions as well as my “front of house” chores and some of the table lilies have come out bang on schedule. Lyra is chilling with the boys, who are in a separate building making roasties. This is a good thing as an earlier eye roll incident nearly shook the kitchen equilibrium to its foundations…

Both my chicks (and my chick-in-sin) are home and we have mum clucking around as well, keeping the fires going. I can hear the chat ebb and flow from the usual new year pack of excellent friends (one of whom is valiantly assisting Masterchef). Tomorrow’s lunch is in the bag (the game pie turned out splendidly this year) and I am settling in for a lovely evening.

So to everyone who has dipped in and out of life here on the border – a very happy New Year and all the best for 2026.

PS – I finished the Christmas jumper after all
